Why are the police called cops?
In the original London police uniform, bright copper buttons adorned the coat. Apparently in those days this was not a particularly common sort of button to have and it caught people’s attention. Soon people began calling them the coppers which was later shortened to the cops. It has also been suggested that it refers to constable on patrol or C.O.P.
Where is the U.S. police force going?
Both inside and outside law enforcement agencies in the U.S. there is growing concern over the para-militarization of the police force. In the last fifteen years the number of times SWAT was called in for circumstances regular officers should have responded to has risen tenfold. This culminated in 2005 when a Miami optometrist was accidently shot by SWAT for running a small sports gambling operation with some friends.
Who was Frank Serpico?
Frank Serpico was a New York cop who went undercover to expose the crime and corruption of the New York City police force. He was an idealist who believed in not taking bribes and using non-brutal methods of catching criminals. He ended up successfully exposing much of the corruption at the cost of great personal tragedy.
