Tactical Flashlight
In contrast to the standard flashlight, a tactical flashlight attaches onto the barrel of a gun so that an officer can see where he or she is pointing the weapon. They are most commonly seen on larger guns such as rifles, shotguns, and submachine guns. However they are becoming more and more common on handguns.
Some criticisms of the tactical flashlight include that it reveals the officers location and that the cost is prohibitive. They have to be small and light to fit on the gun while still putting out a very bright light. Although in a non-lethal capacity they have been useful in blinding and disorienting the target as well as instilling fear into the suspect.
A better tactical flashlight is one the employs infrared light alongside night vision goggles. This doesn’t reveal the operator’s location as much as a regular light. But if the suspect has night vision this approach will not work. The other problem with this method is that it is even more expensive than a regular tactical flashlight.
